Today's song: Hello by Poe
I am listening to Poe and Erin asks me, "Do you just like Poe because she is pretty?" Of course i am listening to Poe because she is pretty, if she wasn't pretty she'd probably have finished at Princeton with a degree in History or English and not be making music. But i am not listening to her specifically because she is pretty. I am listening to her because i like her music. I think Jennifer Love Hewitt is pretty. Believe me, no one on this planet wanted to believe she could sing more than i did, but she cannot sing. Being pretty is not enough, not for Jennifer Love Hewitt, not for Paris Hilton, not for Annie Danielewski.
I won't lie. The first time i heard Poe was back in 1995. She was on MTV in the video for Angry Johnny. Watching the pretty blonde in the red skirt writhe around on the bed was appealing. The next time i saw her was also on MTV, this time on Loveline. A young girl was calling in expressing her reluctance to engage in oral sex with her boyfriend. Poe asked her if she had tried it, and told the girl she should try it, "you might like it." Great advice if you ask me.
After these experiences i had Bonehead get me a copy of her album. That album would stay in my car's cd player for the next five years until it was replaced by Haunted, Poe's second album. I still put her songs on the discs i make for my cars. I liked Alan Wake because they had the good sense to put Poe on the soundtrack.
I friended Poe on Myspace. You kiddies might not remember Myspace. Myspace is Betamax. It was superior to its competitor but it lost the format wars because the public is composed of idiots who when left to decide for themselves make poor choices. This is my explanation for how obama became president as well. But anyway i friended Poe on Myspace. I joined her Angry Psycos page. I read her posts about her struggle with the man to get her music back. I almost bought her brother's book House of Leaves but i hate postmodernism.
It has been ten years now since she put out an album. I wait patiently. When she puts out an album i will buy it on day one at 12:01 a.m. It is fair to say that i do not listen to her just because she is pretty.

ReplyDeleteYes,yes, it is post modern. I like it, and that is not my deal. It is also Lovecraft like. You can borrow it if it makes you feel superior to the post modern thing.
And it sucks that it was published and the next Gemmell is probably out there pulling his hair out to find a publisher.
Also, I think Poe made the cut back in the Camelot days because she was prettty.
