Today's song: Bullet With Butterfly Wings by The Smashing Pumpkin
I have planned to do this song since i conceived this little endeavor. The problem has been trying to think of what to say. After all i can offer no fresh insights. The Smashing Pumpkins story is common. Egotistical band member 1 clashes with others. Sides are chosen. Band implodes. Throw in a story about band member 2's drug problems. Take out the drug problem and this is the plot of That Thing You Do a nice little movie written and directed by Tom Hanks.
I liked the Pumpkins well enough. Their music didn't change my life, i was too old for that by the time they were around. And frankly if a band's music changes your life, your life sucks and you should consider sleeping on the railroad tracks. But their sings were catchy and a little better then a lot of what was cranked out by the grunge scene in the 90's.
I picked this song because the opening line is so memorable. The Pumpkins put out better songs, and much better videos. Tonight, Tonight is a classic and is in my top 20 favorite videos. But the opening line of this song is iconic. Hearing it drags me kicking and screaming back to the mid-90's and then i remember it was not so bad then; the music was good, i was in Seattle, and Newt Gingrich had successfully taken control of the House.
Ok eight down, twenty-three to go.
