Time For Something New

Today's Song: Little Lion Man by Mumford and Sons

You know the day i knew i was old?  It was the day i went to a record store (they didn't have records but i am old so i still call them record stores) to buy some new music and walked out with an album that was ten years old.  That was in 1999, the album Depeche Mode 101.  So by that measure i have been old for eleven years.

The simple fact is that your musical tastes pretty much get locked in by the time you graduate from college.  They don't change much after that.  If you look at the music i have been selecting you see a heavy bias toward new wave and alternative rock.  This is the music that was popular when i was a teenager.  You have seen Depesche Mode and the Cure this month because i have already covered them in other postings.

Trying to stay fresh i have covered mostly songs i have not written about before.  But there has been no music from 2010 covered yet.   I am twenty four days in and it is about time i tried some new music.  Although this is a slight cheat depending on how you look at it.  The song was recorded in 2009 and released in 2009, but i didn't see i until 2010.  By my reckoning that makes it from this year.

The Wikipedia tells me that this song is categorized as indie folk.  Typically i can't stand folk music.  That is the music of hippies.  I hate hippies.  Maybe less than gypsies and and hobos, but i still hate them a lot.  So is there some cognitive dissonance kicking in here?  No, the fact is that this is English folk music with roots stretching back much further than the 1960's.  And the song is intense and frenetic.  If you were reading yesterday i used the same words to describe Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal.  I like frenetic, intense music, often regardless of genre.

So there you have it, a new song.  I am not yet so ossified that i cannot find new music to enjoy.  Maybe it is still possible even in these advanced years to continue to evolve.  After all, i did just cease being a Philistine in 2009.

Later
