Time Travel is Really Hard to Write About

Today's song: Fly Like an Eagle by The Steve Miller Band

When i conceived this project this was not the song i intended to start with, but yesterday i realized the joke was simply too good to pass up on.

The song isn't about time travel but it always make me think of it. Also i wanted to come up with a good reason to quote Demetri Martin and this is good enough. "I have a time machine at home. It only goes forward at regular speed." This is what the song is about.

This is the kind of music that was popular in the 70's. The kind of people who listened to it were the same people who voted in Jimmy Carter. Things got much better in the 80's which brought us New Wave and Ronald Reagan . If you are not sure what New Wave is, don't worry i will be including many examples this month. If you are not sure who Ronald Reagan is, go away and never come back here.

So should i write about the song, the band, or something else. That is the essential conundrum with this project. I am not a music scholar nor an amateur enthusiast so i don't think i will spend the month writing about the history of the songs and bands i choose or are chosen for me. I previously wrote that i'd mostly be providing trivia or some personal anecdote about the song. Having spent some time thinking about the task i have set before myself i think some posts will simply use the song as a jumping off point for something else. This song is one of those, mainly because i have nothing insightful to say about the Steve Miller Band and i'll skip jokes about how being on drugs was necessary to appreciate 70's culture, at least for now.

For those of you who do not recognize the title of this post you are missing out of something. Community is the best sit-com on tv right now and potentially could be one of the all time greats. You should be watching the show. More importantly you should be telling others to watch Community. NBC has a history of squandering its treasures; look at the way it treated Scrubs. It looks like NBC is currently treating the show well giving it an 8:00 slot, but going up against Big Bang Theory makes for tough competition. Right now it is even money on whether or not Community will get another season. I have hopes, Scrubs had eight good seasons on NBC and one poor season on ABC despite NBC's best efforts to hold it down and kill it, so a show they are not actively trying to suppress might be given a chance to grow and find its audience.

Not every post this month will be this long, but i wanted a good start to kick off the month.

Jason you do indeed get two requests, just post them as comments here. If you want them to be a surprise to the audience, which right now is mostly you, i'll post them after doing the song(s) you choose.

  1. In the vein of the original intent of this project, my first request shall be George Thorogood - Bad to the Bone. It is a pretty good song, but I choose it because I will always associate it with Terminator 2. I doubt I will ever have a better movie experience than opening night of T2 on then Indiana's largest movie screen -- experienced in the best of company and with pockets full of ice cream, cheese, and soda.

  2. Oh, and I will watch Community because you say so. I was fortunate to heed your advice and watch Corner Gas. I caught every episode including the last season before WGN pulled it. At least the seasons are available on DVD, unlike Ed...

  3. Who's up for the road trip to Saskatchewan. I concur on the Community bump.
