Dealer's Choice

Today's song: Winter by Josh Radin

I was not going to do this song, Winter is just too hard.  It is a great song, but it is a hard song to post about.

The lyrics and melancholy music don't lend themselves to a comic approach.  This is an issue i noticed this month.  There are not a lot of happy lyrics to select from.  If you look at the selections i made this month, you might think i was depressed.  This is because when you select good songs, you don't get too many options for positive lyrics.

Like many great songs and artists that i have heard in the last ten years, i first heard this song on Scrubs.  It is hard to say whether my fondness for the song stems from the quality of the song or the quality of the episode of Scrubs it was in.  In either event both are first rate.

Winter is one of my favorite songs.  It is definitely my favorite Joshua Radin song.   Zac Braff has horrible taste in politicians, but his taste in music is impeccable.  Whether it is the music he found for Scrubs or one of his movies his choices are spot on.  About half the music in my car, and nearly all of it that is less than ten years old, was from Scrubs or a Zac Braff film.  I am on the record saying songs won't actually change your life, so i will use a quote from Garden State to avoid contradicting myself.  In an early scene, Sam (the ever so lovely Natalie Portman) passes Andrew (a rather plain Zac Braff) a headset which is playing the song "New Slang" by The Shins as she says "You gotta hear this one song — it’ll change your life; I swear."  The song didn't change my life, but it did change my playlist.

Most of you who find yourselves on this blog already are familiar with Scrubs and you know this part, but bear with me as i enlighten the rest of my audience.  This song is found in what is probably the best episode of Scrubs.  The guest star for the episode is Brendan Fraser. I won't spoil the episode.  It is the sixtieth episode of Scrubs, episode fourteen of season three.  If you are interested, let me know and i'll lend you a copy of my season three dvd's.  If you like John C. McGinley, this is probably is best performance on Scrubs.

Well, which one would you select?  I am trying to avoid being obvious over on Facebook.  I am also trying to avoid making people there think i am terminally depressed.  In this instance, the song choice was Sam's and the choice of lyric was his as well.  Never let it be said that i don't listen to my fans.  And that ladies and gentlemen is why the whole second verse was posted.

Now on to the main event, the lyric selection.  This time i am going to do something a little different.  I am going to post the lyrics in their entirety so you can see for yourself the challenge of selecting a lyric from this song.

I should know who I am by now
I walk the record stand somehow
Thinkin' of winter
The name is the splinter inside me
While I wait

And I remember the sound
Of your November downtown
And I remember the truth
A warm December with you

But I don't have to make this mistake
And I don't have to stay this way
If only I would wake

The walk has all been cleared by now
Your voice is all I hear somehow
Calling out winter
Your voice is the splinter inside me
While I wait

And I remember the sound
Of your November downtown
And I remember the truth
A warm December with you
But I don't have to make this mistake
And I don't have to stay this way
If only I would wake

I could have lost myself
In rough blue waters in your eyes
And I miss you still

Oh I remember the sound
Of your November downtown
And I remember the truth
A warm December with you
But I don't have to make this mistake
And I don't have to stay this way
If only I would wake

Well, which one would you select?  I am trying to avoid being obvious over on Facebook.  I am also trying to avoid making people there think i am terminally depressed.  In this instance, the song choice was Sam's and the choice of lyric was his as well.  Never let it be said that i don't listen to my fans.  And that ladies and gentlemen is why the whole second verse was posted.

  1. My opinions may not carry Perfect Truth Value™, but Sam chose the wrong song. Peter Gabriel, hands down, is much better and WAY more quotable.

The book of love is long and boring
No one can lift the damn thing
It's full of charts and facts and figures,
    and instructions for dancing
    But I
I love it when you read to me
    And you
    You can read me anything
The book of love has music in it
In fact that's where music comes from
    Some of it's just transcendental
Some of it's just really dumb
    But I
I love it when you sing to me
    And you
    You can sing me anything
The book of love is long and boring
    And written very long ago
It's full of flowers and heart-shaped boxes
And things we're all too young to know
    But I
I love it when you give me things
    And you
You ought to give me wedding rings
    And I
I love it when you give me things
    And you
You ought to give me wedding rings
You ought to give me wedding rings
