The Greatest Song in the World

Today's song: Tribute by Tenacious D

Today isn't the day i am doing the best video.  It will get done, there are still sixteen days left.  Today we are going to talk about Tenacious D.

Back before Jack Black was the chubby, agile guy on Community, he was the Costar on HBO's Tenacious D.   You know how there's always one show on Showtime or HBO that makes you think maybe the addition cost of a premium movie channel is worth it?  Well Tenacious D was not that show.  I was barely aware of it during its HBO run.  I became aware of the existence of Tenacious D when they put out the video for Wonderboy.  One day i found myself needing to add something to my shopping cart on Amazon to finish spending my $25.00 refund and qualify for free shipping.  The thing i found was Tenacious D - The Complete Master Works.

I got the DVD's, and promptly put them in a cabinet where they would sit for many months.  I had no real desire to watch them and didn't know much about Tenacious D.  Then one day i had a little time to kill in the long winter weekends that follow the Superbowl.  This is an awful time of the year because my Sundays are no longer accounted for.  With ten or eleven free hours to kill and precious little to watch, i remembered that i had that Jack Black DVD.

So i started to watch.  And it was good.  "The Greatest Song in the World" is their best episode.  The episode version of the song is my preferred version.  You can find it on youtube.  If you check it out, be sure to notice how young Jack looks.  Kyle looks pretty much the same today, not that you see him much these days.  Kyle Gass is the Jazzy Jeff to Black's Fresh Prince.

A lot of people hate Jack Black, and with good reason.  He isn't consistently funny the way Owen Wilson is.  And sometimes a little Black goes a long way a little like Will Ferrell.  But generally i like Black.  You have to respect the talent of a man that can go from foul-mouthed, devil-worshiping rocker to animated anthropomorphic martial arts master and remain funny.  Bonus points are awarded for his role as Buddy.

So now you know the story of how i came own the only Jack Black work i had for a long time.  Maybe sometime later i'll talk about my second acquisition in the Jack Black collection, but that is a story for another time.

Later

Bob

  1. Well, I'd better get my second request in as I want to allow you ample time to fit it in around whatever future plans you have for songs, stories, or videos. My second request is selected for three reasons -- first, just because I really like the song and I know you do as well; second, because just a couple of years ago I learned the interesting backstory about how permission was obtained to release the song and wanted you to be able to share that with your loyal readers; third, because it is a foundational element upon which many of your musical preferences are based and cannot thusly be ignored.
