La, La La La La

Today's song: Don't You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds

Today's post is not inspired by The Breakfast Club.  I never liked that movie.  Maybe i was not an outcast in school so i cannot appreciate what the characters stand for.  Maybe the movie just isn't all that it has been built into.  For whatever reason i just don't care for the movie.

So why select a song inexorably bound to a movie that i dislike?  Well first of all it is a good song.  Makes you wonder why three different acts turned down a song that would end up number one.  But the other reason is that the song is used to great effect in Easy A.

It is a good time to be a child of the Eighties.  People who grew up in the Eighties are now in positions where they can force the culture at large to relive the parts we liked best.  Now i get why the Baby Boomers did the same thing to us by trying to bring back the sixties.  Except the sixties sucked, and the Eighties were awesome.

Easy A is a good movie.  I like Emma Stone.  She is pretty without being too hot and she is very funny.  I have a hard time buying a story where someone that looks like Jaime Pressly is selected to play anything but the hottest girl in school.  If you've seen commercials for Glee you know that there is no way girls who look like that could be unpopular in high school even if they were all in chess club.

In Easy A Stone's character makes constant references to Eighties movies.  Do i really think that a high school girl would be so conversant with cinema dating back a quarter century?  No, of course not.  I also think high school girls don't talk like Juno MacGuff, but i liked that film too.  The movie ends with our hero triumphantly riding off on a lawnmower with Don't You playing.  That scene like the rest of the movie just works for me.

PS I am working on Jason's second request.
